How to blur a moving face in a video

A stationary blur will not follow someone across the frame. FaceBlur detects faces as the clip plays and moves each cover with the latest detection. It can still lose profiles, distant faces, and faces hidden by hands or hair, so watch the exported file before sharing it.

Blur a moving face

  1. Choose the clip. Open FaceBlur and select an MP4, MOV, or WebM file up to 90 MB.
  2. Play and scrub. Check turns, cuts, entrances, exits, and quick movement.
  3. Choose the cover. Pick mosaic, soft blur, or solid cover. Increase the margin only when a mask is present but too tight.
  4. Export and watch. Review the complete downloaded file, not just the preview.
No mask means no detection. After analysis, you can adjust individual face tracks or add moving covers. A person may appear in more than one track.

Watch the cover follow a turn

Both people in this nine-second clip turn toward the camera. The video on the right is FaceBlur’s export using mosaic at 72% strength and 42% margin. It is a clear example of the feature, not a claim that every clip will track this cleanly.

Before: both faces move during the turn.
After: the mosaic moves with each detected face.

What the tracking does

FaceBlur matches each new detection to a recent face position and smooths the mask between them. If detection drops briefly, it holds the last mask to reduce flicker. That can bridge a blink or quick turn, but it cannot predict where a hidden face went.

After analysis, you can adjust individual face tracks or add moving covers. A person may appear in more than one track.

When the blur slips

What you seeWhat to do
The mask follows the face but is too tightIncrease the margin, then replay the section.
The mask disappears during a turn or obstructionThe detector missed the face. Check nearby frames; use manual tracking if it keeps happening.
The mask trails fast movementReplay the section slowly. Margin can cover small lag; persistent lag needs manual tracking.
The mask jumps to another personCrossing faces are ambiguous. Inspect the crossing frame by frame and use a manual editor if the swap persists.
The covered face is still recognizableRaise mosaic or blur strength, or use solid cover. This changes the effect, not the tracking.

Frames worth checking

Watch the full export once without scrubbing. If the voice, a spoken name, a badge, or another detail identifies the person, face blur alone is not enough.

Try it on a short clip

Check the mask during movement, export, then watch the downloaded file from beginning to end.
